In August, we received a pleasant surprise when Ferrari made a surprise reveal of the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider. The 50th drop-top model introduced by the Italian brand has now had its European debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.
The Pista Spider is far more than just a 488 Spider with a bit of added power. Among its additives is the award-winning 3.9-litre V8 turbocharged engine, fuelling a top speed of 211 mph, 0-60 mph in 2.85 seconds and a mind-boggling 0-124 mph in 8 seconds. As if not impressive enough, the most powerful V8 engine in Ferrari history also brags putting out 720bhp and 770 Nm of torque.
Meanwhile, weight was slashed extensively, with a 39 pound (18 kg) weight loss from just the engine! How?
- Thinner cylinder liners
- New valves and springs and reshaped exhaust manifolds made from Inconel
- A lighter crankshaft, flywheel and titanium con-rods
The already notable aero efficiency of the 488 Spider has been improved by 20 per cent, thanks to active aero on the underbody and a redesigned blown rear spoiler.
In terms of design and styling, there isn’t much difference between the coupe and this model. Most notable of all is the addition of the stripe that spans the length of the car, said to “recall the movement of the airflow.”
Two new carbon-fibre instrument clusters enhance the cockpit, the glove compartment has been removed. To add to its weight loss, Ferrari has also got rid of door handles and floor mats which have been replaced with patterned aluminium plates.
Pricing is yet to be revealed but we can expect it to be higher than the hardtop model, which starts at around a quarter of a million pounds.
